Fly Fishing Lessons
Battenkill Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons for all skill levels, with a strong focus on beginners looking to build confidence and a solid foundation. Our lessons are hands-on, relaxed, and centered around learning by doing, not standing on the sidelines.
We recommend booking a half-day fly fishing lesson, which allows time to cover the fundamentals while still spending most of the session fishing on the water.
How Our Fly Fishing Lessons Work
Lessons typically begin on grass, where we introduce the basics of fly casting in a fun, low-pressure environment. Once the fundamentals are in place, we move to the river to apply those skills while actively fishing.

On-river instruction and guided fishing
Reading the river, including current seams, structure, and holding water
Fly selection and presentation for different conditions
Gear selection, including rods, flies, and setups based on where and how you fish
Fly fishing techniques that apply across many fishing environments, not just trout fishing
A Beginner-Friendly, On-Water Approach
Our fly fishing lessons are especially well suited for beginners. You do not need any prior experience. Instruction is practical, approachable, and always tied to real fishing situations. You are fishing while you learn, not just practicing technique.
