Our Mission

At Battenkill Outfitters, our mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural resources that make outdoor adventures possible. We are committed to fostering a deeper connection between people and nature while ensuring that the ecosystems we explore in Southern Vermont and New York flourish for generations to come. Recognizing the impact outdoor recreation can have, we’ve developed the Battenkill River Keeper Initiative - a comprehensive program designed to promote sustainability, inspire stewardship, and celebrate the natural and cultural significance of the Battenkill River.

Battenkill River Keeper Initiative

The Battenkill River Keeper is our dedicated conservation effort to protect one of New England’s most iconic waterways. Through this initiative, we combine practical waste management solutions, educational resources, and community engagement to minimize human impact while inspiring a greater appreciation for the river’s unique history and vibrant ecosystem.

  • Waste Management Program: Strategically placed waste stations at high-traffic landings make it easy for visitors to carry out their trash, protecting the river and its surrounding environment.

  • Engaging Education Kiosks: Informative kiosks at key locations celebrate the Battenkill’s rich history, highlight its incredible biodiversity, and share best practices for sustainable recreation.

  • Best Practices Advocacy: We provide guidelines for responsible outdoor activities, from catch-and-release fishing to minimizing erosion and respecting wildlife, ensuring that every visitor contributes to the river’s preservation.

Best Practices for Recreating on the Battenkill

Carry In, Carry Out: Use waste stations to remove all personal trash, including fishing lines and bait containers.

Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance, keep pets under control, and avoid feeding wildlife.

Catch and Release: Use barbless hooks and practice gentle handling to ensure fish survival.

Minimize Impact: Stick to trails and launch sites to protect sensitive areas and native vegetation.

Safety First: Be prepared with appropriate gear and stay aware of weather conditions.

Spread the Word: Share these best practices with friends and family to inspire a community of conservation-minded recreationists.

The Battenkill River Keeper Initiative reflects our commitment to protecting this beloved river while inviting others to join in preserving its beauty and significance. Together, we can ensure that the Battenkill continues to inspire, educate, and provide unforgettable outdoor experiences for years to come.

The Battenkill Fund

Supporting the Battenkill and Arlington Common

The Battenkill Fly Fishing Festival is dedicated to celebrating the beauty and ecological importance of the Battenkill River while supporting crucial conservation efforts. Through the festival, we aim to raise awareness and funds for the Battenkill and the Arlington Common, fostering a community committed to the sustainability of these vital resources. The festival's efforts are channeled into supporting the newly established Battenkill Fund, created to finance initiatives that address human impact on the river and promote responsible stewardship.

About the Battenkill Fund

The Battenkill Fund is a pivotal element of our festival's mission. Established in partnership with the Arlington Common, this fund is dedicated to supporting programs that mitigate the human impact on the Battenkill River, ensuring it remains a pristine environment for all to enjoy. The fund prioritizes projects that enhance river health, support sustainable recreational activities, and educate the public about the river's significance in our ecosystem and community.

The Battenkill Riverkeeper Initiative

Funded by the Battenkill Fund, the Battenkill Riverkeeper Initiative embodies our commitment to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Battenkill River. This initiative is focused on fostering river stewardship, promoting sustainable recreation, and educating the public about the river’s ecological and cultural importance.

Phase One: Public Waste Management & Education Program

Our first major effort under the Riverkeeper Initiative is the launch of a Public Waste Management & Education Program, aimed at providing essential waste disposal services along the Vermont stretch of the Battenkill. This includes installing facilities at key public landings, such as the Covered Bridge in West Arlington and the Arlington Rec Park, to ensure the river remains clean and accessible. Each location will also feature educational kiosks, offering visitors insights into the river’s history and ecosystem and encouraging responsible recreation.
